Hi guys. So my school doesn't want me to do shop class (building class) because I'm blind. Me and my TVI are advicating for me to go to it still, and not just go down to the accademic room with a textbook. But anyways, is there anything I can do in that class even, like is it even worth it if i'm just gonna have to do the writing and the math part

I didn't have shop in school but when I experienced it in a rehab place I found it quite nice. I can't imagine a school not letting a blind person do shop.

On the other hand, my schools junior high and high school alike, didn't allow me to do physical education, and that was strange, because other schools didn't seem to have that same prejudice, and those schools were in my area.

well I did Design and analisus and there were small tools. I could do that. I'm thinking they are scared of me operating a saw, for example.

Well, there are risks to most things I suppose.

I have a friend who used to live near me when I lived in the states. That dude could operate any kind of saw, drill, whatever. I looked around his shop and man, some of those things looked so dangerous, but he got along with all that somehow. Sure, he got injured, but not often.

Aptitudes should be measured for folks, not just plain denial.

I actually did do work shop and I used a saw but I had to do it with sighted help. That was the biggest rule was that blind people needed to have a sighted person helping me out.
All of you are amazing. Never forget it!

So here's the thing. I'm interested in woodworking myself, but I'm deathly afraid of using table saws and the like. Perhaps see if there's things you can do that involve only non powered tools. Glues too perhaps. You don't need a spinning death trap to succeed there. Let me know what you figure out, I haven't learned woodworking yet but I'd love to.
Change is not always growth, but growth is often rooted in change. Because of the friends I have known, the honorable people I have met, I know I am no solitary hero of unique causes. I know now that when I die, I will live on.

I just got out of shop. I can't walk around the shop independently, understandably, but everything else is fine. I can't operate most power tools, but I could probs do a drill press and stuff, and maybe the nale gun, maybe. But we're doing safety first cupple weaks.
