Hey there!

I was thinking about a braille display for a few years and now when I learn new language, want to get back to playing piano and when my friends tell me that with a braille display it is much easier to work with source code, I seriously decide to buy one.
Now I try to save some money and after a new smartphone I would probably buy a braille display or other braille device.

So my question for braille devices users:
what kind of device you recommend and why?

Somewhere I saw a very portable thing which has a minimal operating system inside, allows you to use it without a computer, to load and read text files, browse the filesystem like a usual file manager but only with braille output.
Also it allowed writing like on a braille typewriter but this feature is the least interesting for me.

Also there is not much free space on my desk near the PC so would be nice if it is something relatively small and not 20 kilogramms in weight.

I have the Orbit Reader 20. Orbit makes the 20 in 2 models, the regular and the plus. If you need 40 cells the Orbit Reader 40 might suit your needs, unless it's too long to fit in your limited space.

I would think 20 cells cumbersome to look at source code but you may have a different opinion. I've never dealt with source code at all, so I really wouldn't know. I was a programmer, but only in BASIC built in on a couple of non-IBM-compatible computers, so my programs were never compiled, just run in BASIC.

I'm thinking about orbit slate 340, it has 120 cells, a better option could be only a kanute 360, but it hasn't a battery it has 2 kilograms :D

Honestly I cannot decide between 20 and 40 cells.
On the one side 40 cells are more useful in situations with source code.
But with some 20 cells and some integrated OS inside you can even read books or notes without a computer and take this device with you anywhere.
But even with 40 cells it looks like this will not be enough for source code because the world standard for most consoles and for recommended line length in most styleguides is from 79 to 90 characters including leading whitespaces.

Well I have the brailient 40 by humanware. They don't make that good of products but the brailient is an exception. Its lightweight, even for 40 sells and it is probably small enough to slip right into a bag. The best thing about it is it is slim enough to just place it in a bag because the carrying case it comes with doesn't have so many pockets and zippers like the braille note.

I was also thinking about brailiant 40 or brailiant 20.
They also have a keyboard and allow you to take notes right after power on.

Most of today's 40 cell displays are relatively small, so you could easily bring them in a medium sized bag suited for standart sized paper, books etc. 20 cell displays will require the same sized bag even though they are smaller because they won't fit in a very small bag anyway. As far as i know, latest focus displays also have the posibility of opening text files. Did you think of them as of an option?

As I see the humanware brailiant series looks the best for me now.
They are expensive especially in Russia, but I will probably stick to one of their products because they have some nice operating system that allows you even to put your own liblouis tables for custom things.

Wow! Custom tables would be interesting for many things, for example reading musical scores produced different ways rather than standart ascii braille. But yeah, costs here in Russia are hmm... It is too difficult to find non obscent words for talking of them. Haha.

Cyrmax is lucky from a point of view, because if such a modell will be in Hungary, I can help him to buy one, as I am a citizen of Hungary. Although such a display costs a lot here as well, but to my knowledge, it's cheaper than in Russia. It would be great if I could help you all, russian folks, but it's a very long time until you get a visa to even enter here.
