You mean this kind of music you get on Nintendos? I'd love to actually play my own stuff with it using my midi keyboard or something

well, there are software applications where you can do stuff, like make your own.
There is a text based one called ppmck, and there is one called famitracker.

Well I think a soundfont would be better for me, because then, I can mess about with the tuning, create pure harmonies etc.

check out musical-artifacts.com
they have a ton of different variants including, OPL2, 3, and 4, as well as gxscc.sf2, and a lot of different things like that.
There is no easy way to let someone down. my advice, just find a way to work things out, and maybe it'll all turn out for the good.
