Hi, I'll start with something not so uncommon I'm quite sure, but funny nevertheless. I jump into an Uber, the driver seems to know some Polish, so I ask him. Do you speak Polish? A little bit, he replies. I then go on to ask him something else, to confirm that he understands where I need to be dropped off, because I was going to a train station at the time. It's safe to say that I did miss the train, but at least it was a regional train, so I didn'twaste any money, as I've bought the ticket later in the train itself.
This is where his Polish knowledge ends, because the guy has no idea what I'm saying. I ask him if he speaks English, he says no, then goes on to ask me if I speak Russian. Well no, I'm in Poland, I'm Polish and I'm just a random youngster trying to get to a train station, so there isn't a high probability that I would, :D
This answer doesn't satisfy him, in fact it seems to subtly enrage him, because he then decides to speak Russian to me throughout the whole journey, proving that he most likely didn't speak any of the languages I asked about, just knew a few words or sentences perhaps. I was trying to use a translation app to give the guy instructions, because sadly it turned out Russian was still very different from Polish and we didn't understand each other at all.
At some point, he stops, gets out of the car and bothers some random Polish people on the street to ask well, I'm not sure what, because those people just told him what I've told him in Polish, which didn't help. He wastes time talking to them in Russian, being oblivious to the fact that no one understands him, then jumps in and we go off to the station. We get there like 10 minutes after I've missed the train I originally wanted to go on, then I ask him if he can guide me, because some uber drivers randomly drop you off in the middle of the street, etc. I had a lot of luggage and didn't want to have to stress about going through crowds alone and finding the right entrance, so I asked himto guide me. He complained something in Russian, in fact he was talking throughout the whole journey and really getting on my nerves, but I was in a good enough mood to reply to him in Polish, because why not? In the end, he helped me and after that it's a whole different story.
Anyway, I hope that people can share theirexperiences positive, negative and everything else inbetween about Uber and similar services here, I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun :)

Let's be honest. It happens in every country. When I was in Poland last year and my Polish was not enough to be understood and they didn't know English, they kept trying to speak to me in Ukrainian. Even if I told them four or five times that I didn't understand the language. I mean, the problem is that I understand a little bit, but I can't answer, only in Russian. And they are offended by that. The language issue was already quite interesting in Poland last year. In restaurants, not everyone necessarily knew Polish, and there were a lot of Ukrainian workers who tried to show that they really knew Polish, but at the same time they spoke Ukrainian and Russian with all the customers. Although after the Russian pirog was renamed to Ukrainian, I had no more questions.
As for funny stories. When my boyfriend was here in Hungary in the summer, he was constantly being mistaken for Hungarian on all kinds of public transport. On the bus he was given a ticket for Hungarians, at the airport he was spoken to in Hungarian, but in a small town of 20,000 people we found the only Russian-speaking person who was a teacher under communism. What is even more funny is the fact that he happened to be the former mayor of the town.
