As far as I know, it's microphones placed on opposite sides of the body in some manner. I did it once using mikes in my belt loops. I got great stereo effect that way.

If you are asking about what it is, it's microphones placed in a way that creates a 3d sound effect. If you're looking for something, there's the Sennheiser Ambeo earbuds for iPhone.
Anything can work. Just decide how much, or what you would like to subject for said thing to work.

I did obtain some plug-ins that allegedly do just that, but could not use them effectively. They do enable you to externalize the audio and position it verticaly and horizontally, but not in front or behind.
